Why go
Ozurgeti gives Guria a base of its own rather than treating the region as a strip between Batumi and Kutaisi. Start in town with the history museum, then seek out the folklore center to understand why Gurian singing has such a distinct place in Georgian music. A visit to Shemokmedi Monastery is a separate journey into the green villages outside town. Tea and Gurian food are part of the wider setting, but neither a performance nor a producer visit should be assumed to happen on demand.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are useful for an in-town visit and a village outing. Cultural events follow their own calendars, so verify a performance separately rather than choosing dates from the season label alone.
Getting there
Reach Ozurgeti overland from Batumi, Kutaisi or elsewhere in Georgia. Batumi Airport is a flight-search gateway, not an airport in Ozurgeti; check current onward and return services before booking, especially if you plan a Shemokmedi visit without a vehicle.
The trade-off
Ozurgeti is a regional town, not a beach or mountain resort. The folklore center's public program may not align with a short stay, and the monastery adds a separate journey; visitors wanting only the coast may prefer Kobuleti.
