Why go
The monastery on the hill above Martvili is also called Chkondidi. Its churches and courtyard reflect a long religious and educational history, while the elevation gives a view over the town and the wider Samegrelo landscape.
Treat the monastery as its own visit before heading to the canyon. It is an active religious place, and the route up, visitor areas and any cable-car service should be checked locally rather than assumed from an older description.
