Why go
Martvili gives the inland side of Samegrelo a base of its own. The Chkondidi monastery rises above town and speaks to the area's long religious and educational history. Martvili Canyon is a separate managed visit along the Abasha River, with its walkway and optional boat trip subject to conditions. Salkhino's former Dadiani summer residence is another independent road outing. Leave time between these places rather than treating them as one walk or a guaranteed circuit.
When to go
Spring and early autumn suit the outdoor visits, though rain can change conditions at the canyon. Confirm the managed trail and boat service for your date; the boat may be suspended in wet weather.
Getting there
Reach Martvili by road from Kutaisi, Zugdidi or another western Georgian base. Kutaisi Airport is a flight-search gateway, not an airport in Martvili. The canyon and Salkhino are separate outings, so arrange onward and return transport before relying on a short stay.
The trade-off
The strongest sights are spread between town and nearby villages. Without a vehicle or arranged transfers, you may spend more time negotiating transport than visiting them, and the canyon boat trip is weather-dependent.
