Why go
Zugdidi deserves time as more than a transfer point on the way to Mestia. The Dadiani palace museum gives the city a clear historical centre, and its neighbouring botanical garden invites a slower look at the landscape the family shaped. Beyond town, the Enguri arch dam offers a completely different story of twentieth-century engineering and the river that runs through western Georgia. Stay long enough to see the city itself, then choose whether the dam fits your next day rather than treating it as an obligatory stop north.
When to go
Spring and early autumn suit a walk through the city and garden. Western Georgia can be wet in any season, so keep the museum as a flexible indoor option and check the forecast for the dam outing.
Getting there
Reach Zugdidi by rail or road from other Georgian cities. Kutaisi Airport is a flight-search gateway, not an airport in Zugdidi; check current onward services and arrival times. The Enguri dam is a separate journey toward Jvari, not a city-centre sight.
The trade-off
The palace and garden are neighbouring visits, while the dam requires separate transport and an operating tour. If you only want a fast transfer to Mestia, an overnight stay here may not be worth the extra time.
