Why go
Mestia gives Svaneti's mountain landscape a human scale. The stone towers are part of the town, not just a backdrop to a hike; Margiani House Museum and the Svaneti Museum help explain the life and craft behind them. On a clear day, the slopes around Hatsvali and Zuruldi offer a wider view. A Chalaadi valley walk is a more demanding, separate choice that depends on safe conditions. Leave room for weather and for the long journey into the region instead of trying to turn every idea into one itinerary.
When to go
Summer is the most useful window for the walks in this guide, but mountain weather and route conditions can change quickly. Museum visits give a worthwhile alternative when the high ground is not sensible.
Getting there
Reach Mestia by a long mountain-road journey from Kutaisi or another western Georgian base. Kutaisi Airport is only a flight-search gateway, not an airport in Mestia; check the onward transfer, road conditions and daylight before committing to an arrival plan.
The trade-off
Getting here takes time, and mountain weather can undo a tightly timed outdoor plan. Lift operation is variable, while the Chalaadi glacier itself has a falling-rock hazard and should never be approached casually.
