Why go
Stepantsminda sits in a broad alpine valley beneath Mount Kazbek. Stay here for Gergeti above town, with Juta and Truso as separate outings that need their own travel and weather plans. Choose the walks that suit your time and the day's conditions; the mountain setting is the reason to linger, not a route to complete. In winter, Gudauri's ski area is another choice via a separate journey to Kobi, not a slope in town.
When to go
June to October is the most useful window for the valley walks in this guide. A winter stay can include Gudauri skiing when the Kobi connection and pistes are open, but check lift, road and weather conditions before relying on that plan.
Getting there
Travel by road from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda. Allow around three hours in good conditions, and more if you stop along the way or the weather turns.
The trade-off
Mountain weather and road conditions can change the plan quickly. Juta and Truso each need a separate transfer from town, so this is not a base for a tightly scheduled trip.
