Why go
Gudauri is a mountain-resort base, not a substitute for the village walks around Stepantsminda. Its strongest reason for a longer stay is time on the marked ski runs, with the Kobi cable car offering another way to see the ridges when passenger service is running. The roadside Panorama viewpoint is a distinct, shorter outing north of the resort. Build a flexible visit around the weather and operating lifts rather than assuming every mountain day will go to plan.
When to go
Plan a ski stay for the operating winter season, but check the current resort calendar, snow and open pistes before booking. Some lifts also run outside winter; do not assume a particular route will be operating on your dates.
Getting there
Reach Gudauri by the Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi. Mountain-road conditions and journey times can change quickly, especially in winter; confirm the road and your transfer before travelling. Tbilisi Airport is the flight-search gateway, not an airport at the resort.
The trade-off
A ski-focused base may feel limited if lifts close or visibility is poor. The Kobi ride and roadside panorama are weather-dependent, and neither should be used to justify unsafe travel or off-piste skiing.
