Why go
Nikortsminda is an eleventh-century cathedral whose sculpted stonework makes the building compelling from several sides. Its later frescoes add another layer, so the visit is as much about looking carefully as seeing a famous silhouette.
The village is outside Ambrolauri, and the church remains a religious place. Allow for a separate journey and a respectful visit; do not count on every interior area being open or photography being permitted.
