Old Batumi rewards attention to the spaces between its landmarks. Balconies, decorated façades and smaller streets sit close to busier squares, giving the centre a more varied character than the modern waterfront alone suggests.
Choose a loose walk through public streets instead of trying to complete every sight. Pause at a square, look at the details above shopfront level and leave room for the everyday city. Many courtyards and entrances are residential, so enjoy them from the public way unless access is clearly invited.
