Why visit
Vardzia is not another chamber inside Rabati: it is a separate rock-cut complex farther south, associated with the reigns of Giorgi III and Queen Tamar. Rooms and passages run across the cliff face, with a church at the heart of the surviving monastery.
What to expect
Allow the site its own day from Akhaltsikhe. The approach, walking and return all take time, and the cliffside paths and steps deserve your attention. Check which parts of the complex are open rather than assuming every passage shown in a photograph can be entered.
Make Vardzia the day's anchor
The road journey, site visit and return are the structure of the day—not gaps around several unrelated stops. Khertvisi can be a deliberate companion when transport and opening arrangements align, but Borjomi is not a sensible extra. Starting from Akhaltsikhe keeps the southern excursion more realistic than a same-day return from Tbilisi.
Expect steps, passages and exposure
The cave complex is experienced by moving across the cliff, not from one level viewing platform. Narrow or uneven sections may not suit every traveller, and open areas can feel exposed. Ask about the current visitor route, take the site at your own pace and respect every closure.
