Why go
Alaverdi's 11th-century cathedral rises from the Alazani Valley, away from Telavi's compact town centre. The scale of the building and its open setting make the visit feel very different from a market stop or the cultivated grounds of Tsinandali.
Plan it as a separate journey, with time to take in the exterior and whatever parts of the active monastery are open to visitors. Restoration or religious activity can affect access, so do not build the day around seeing a particular interior or artwork without checking first.
