Why go
Telavi gives eastern Kakheti a practical center of gravity. Its working food market and Batonistsikhe fortress reward time in town. Tsinandali's estate and Alaverdi's cathedral are different outings into the surrounding valley, not stops to rush through on a single circuit. Leave room for a long meal or another carefully chosen wine stop rather than treating the region as a checklist.
When to go
Late spring through autumn suits market browsing and long meals. Autumn can bring harvest activity, which varies by year and winery.
Getting there
Travel east from Tbilisi by road. Allow roughly two hours in ordinary conditions and check current travel options before setting out.
The trade-off
Telavi is a useful base, but winery visits and Tsinandali still need transport planning. It is less suited to a trip built entirely around walking from your accommodation.
