Why go
Bolnisi's central streets still carry the outline of Katharinenfeld, the settlement founded by Swabian Germans in the nineteenth century. Its houses blend Swabian and Georgian features: look for Georgian-style wooden balconies alongside high roofs, timber framing and deep cellars associated with the German settlers' homes.
This is a walk through a lived-in neighbourhood, not a museum trail with guaranteed access to every building. Enjoy the facades from public streets and give residents privacy; the value of the visit is seeing how several periods of town life overlap.
