Why go
Bolnisi's centre preserves houses from the former German settlement of Katharinenfeld, a history visible in the streets rather than confined to one monument. Outside town, Bolnisi Sioni holds some of Georgia's earliest surviving Christian inscriptions, while Tsughrughasheni Church belongs to a later medieval chapter. The two churches are separate visits in the surrounding area. Stay here to give both the town and its countryside time instead of treating them as a quick stop from Tbilisi.
When to go
Spring and autumn suit a street walk and the open-air church visits. Religious services and conservation work may affect interior access, so confirm arrangements close to your visit.
Getting there
Reach Bolnisi by road from Tbilisi or another Georgian base. Tbilisi Airport is the flight-search gateway, not an airport in Bolnisi. Arrange onward and return transport for the churches, which are outside the town-centre walk.
The trade-off
The town's historic houses are lived-in buildings, not a preserved open-air museum. Both churches add separate road journeys, so a car-free short stay needs more planning than the compact centre suggests.
