Why go
Founded under King David IV in the early 12th century, Gelati grew into a centre of religious learning and monumental art. The churches, academy and landscape form a UNESCO World Heritage site rather than a single building to glance at from the road.
Give the complex time, but do not assume every interior or artwork will be accessible. Gelati remains a living monastery, and conservation work has continued at the site. What you can see may differ from older photographs or descriptions.
Before you go
Arrange a separate transfer from Kutaisi and check current visitor access and conservation restrictions. Dress and behave respectfully at the active monastery.
Allow extra time
Visit times are estimates for this activity only. Travel, queues and breaks are extra.
