Why visit
Svetitskhoveli stands at the centre of Mtskheta and is one of the three components of the town's UNESCO World Heritage property. The present cathedral dates from the eleventh century, above earlier churches on a site central to Georgian Christianity.

Build a walk around the cathedral
Svetitskhoveli is in Mtskheta's historic centre, so it pairs naturally with the old streets and Samtavro Monastery. Jvari belongs to the same World Heritage property but stands across the river on a hill; plan that as a separate road journey rather than part of the town walk.
Leave room for an active church
A quiet service, a large group or conservation work can change the rhythm of the visit. The exterior, enclosure and town setting still give the cathedral context when interior access is limited. Visitors interested in architecture or religious history will benefit more from an unhurried visit than a quick photograph.
