Why go
Mtskheta was the capital of ancient Kartli and remains a spiritual centre of Georgia. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Samtavro Monastery anchor a walk through town, while Jvari Monastery stands on a separate hill above the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. The three sites are part of one UNESCO World Heritage property, but they are distinct visits. Stay overnight if you want time for the streets and river setting after the day-trip crowds leave.
When to go
Spring and early autumn suit walking between the in-town sites and taking in the views at Jvari. Religious services and conservation work can affect visitor access at any time, so check arrangements close to your visit.
Getting there
Reach Mtskheta by road from Tbilisi or another Georgian base. Tbilisi Airport is the flight-search gateway, not an airport in Mtskheta. Jvari is across the river on a hill and needs a separate road transfer; arrange a return rather than treating it as part of the town walk.
The trade-off
Mtskheta is close enough to Tbilisi for a day trip, so an overnight stay is most rewarding if you want a slower pace. Its main landmarks are active religious sites, and Jvari cannot be reached on the same short walk as the town churches.
