Why go
Lagodekhi is a practical base for the marked visitor routes of its protected areas, with a range of effort that the region's wine-town guides do not offer. Start at the protected-areas visitor centre and its short nature interpretation path, choose a separate walk to Ninoskhevi Waterfall, or plan the multi-day Black Rock Lake route if you have the experience and conditions for it. The strict nature reserve is not a general recreation area; follow the managed visitor routes and current guidance from the administration.
When to go
Lower forest routes can be considered across more of the year, subject to weather and trail conditions. The Black Rock Lake route has a much shorter high-mountain season; ask the protected-areas administration about the current opening, permits and overnight arrangements before making plans.
Getting there
Reach Lagodekhi by road from Tbilisi or other Kakheti bases. Tbilisi Airport is the flight-search gateway, not an airport in town. The Ninoskhevi route starts at Gurgeniani rather than the main visitor centre, so arrange its separate transfer and return.
The trade-off
The three outings demand very different levels of effort. Black Rock Lake is a steep multi-day mountain trek near an international border, with registration and changing conditions; it is not a casual extension of the short forest path.
